Have you read Falling Behind by Francis Fukuyama? The book was published in 2008 by the Oxford University Press. It is the compilation contributions made by participants in the November 2005 seminar in Buenos Aires entitled "Explaining the Development Gap between Latin America and the United States".

The question posed by the author and the seminar is why did Latin American fall behind the "other" America when Bolivia and Peru were both richer and hosted more complex civilizations than any that existed in North America in 1700? The subject of the book is how and when this gap in economic performance emerged, and why Latin America has not been able to overcome it as many countries in East Asia have. The Vidanta Forum will have a capacity of 450 attendees, including international and national experts, students, academics, businessmen, intellectuals and members of civil society organizations.
